“pop, knock knock knock” followed by loss of power is not really the best way to end the evening. RIP Vulcan.

Fingers crossed not a too expensive fix.

No bueno. Hopefully it isn’t as catastrophic as it sounds.

I’m not sure it’s fixable. Despite their ubiquity, internals for these engines aren’t easy to come by. Kawasaki doesn’t sell bearings or connecting rods for them.

Ouch.
Can any parts be salvaged from donors in the U.S. or abroad in the U.K. or Japan?

Dude, you have some of the worst luck when it comes to vehicles. I hope it’s salvageable. It seems like the free Sentra was one of the better running ones for you, sadly.

Bummer.... Well, check on eBay for a replacement motor..

$700. Ugh.

Until the Sentra shat out the crank thrust bearings.
New engine is gonna be $700. These aren’t rebuildable. Yaaaay.

Just offered a guy $250 for an automatic ford contour. Meh.
![]() 05/09/2018 at 10:14 |

Would just need a whole used engine. Around $700 shipped on ebay it looks like.

Is the current engine beyond a rebuild?
Whats the make and model exactly. I see Kawasaki Vulcan, what engine?

Surprised it’s that much.... bummer. Sorry man...
When I got my present motorcycle, it dropped a valve on the 5th day I had it.. Entire engine grenaded... and I had to go find a “new” 25 year old ducati motor.... Took a few weeks, but found one pretty cheap ($700) and it was waaaaaaaaaay better than the one it replaced (big bore kit and race cams already in it and with only a quarter of the miles on it)......
So keep your eyes open and maybe this will end up better for you in the end....

Found a wrecked Ninja 500 locally. Trying to get ahold of the guy and see if it runs.

Vulcan 500. Engines aren’t realistically rebuildable.

Now you’re thinking! Is it the same engine?

higher compression ratio and more sportbike-like in that there’s less low down torque but more high-end excitement. The left side stator cover is slightly different but easily swapped out. The differences between the Ninja 500 and Vulcan 500 engines internally are:
Pistons
Valves
Camshafts
Cam followers
But “from the wrist pin down” they’re identical.

Well, when I said “same engine” I really meant engine casing, in that, does it fit in your bike’s frame?
Sounds like it does...? That’d be cool.
My bike is a big dirtbike/GS bike- but the motor I found for it came from a supersport... so kind of hte same thing... slightly different set up, but lots more fun!

Yeah, the mounts are all the same. I think there’s a dual sport that nobody bought that has the same engine as well
